    If you ever played OSR without messing with die rolls (e.g. 1st ed Basic D&D 'Keep on the Borderlands' module that was bundled with it) then you are intimately familiar with multiple(!) PCs dying in their first combat encounter. ;-)

    Of course, back then it wasn't a die roll, it was a chit, because multi-sided dice were too expensive.
